Big Snow Resort - Blackjack

Ski resorts in USA
Just north of the Wisconsin border sits Michigan's upper peninsula. The northern part of the state gets lots of dumps thanks to lake-effect snow coming off of Lake Superior. That is music to the ears of skiers and snowboarders in the Midwest, and places like the Big Snow Resort - Blackjack are high on their lists for places to visit each season.

The Interstate highway system does not reach the upper peninsula, so motorists will use US Route 51 to Ironwood, along the border with Wisconsin. US Route 2 takes drivers east to Bessemer, with the resort just north of there. Sawyer International Airport in Marquette serves the upper peninsula, with visitors flying into the facility needing ground transportation to reach the ski area.

Lake Superior's Snow

Michigan's Big Snow Resort - Blackjack forms a larger complex with the Indianhead Mountain ski area. Visitors to the "Big Snow Country" region call the two mountains Big Snow Resort. Large dumps from storms bring an average annual snowfall greater than 204 inches, thanks to lake-effect snow conditions from Lake Superior just to the north. Visitors used to the winter conditions in southern Michigan ski venues need to remember that conditions in the upper peninsula are harsher, so balaclavas and extra layers are must-haves.

The H. W. Rider Ski Shop sits in the lodge's basement and offers retail shopping for new equipment and the necessities folks may have forgotten at home. Rentals are available for local snow hounds wanting to travel light. Big Snow Resort - Blackjack offers dine-in/take-out at Logger's Lounge, with other facilities found at Indianhead Mountain. Chalets, condos, and hotel rooms at the resort can accommodate between 2 and 14 guests. The communities around Big Snow Resort - Blackjack also offer a full range of amenities and cater to ski bums during the winter months.
