We turned into AT animals last season, going farther than ever to find decent snow and new challenges. In doing so, we discovered the progressive design and centered mount that make the Underworld so awesome for day touring aren’t as awesome when you’re humping a huge pack around on ramped-up tech bindings in flimsy Pebax boots. Then Nate Greenberg, guru of the Sierra Eastside, came into the showroom one day and picked up the Governor.

“You need this,” he said, “not this ski though—this shape.”

So we made it: traditional mount, directional, flat tail, lightweight Low-Fat Layup, touring tip and tail notch. More shovel means something to lean on when you’re as top-heavy as Christy Canyon in stilettos. Front Rocker and multi-radius sidecut make it easy to swing around narrow, sticky chutes and sketchy face traverses.
