Backcountry skiing, also called off-piste, alpine touring, or out-of-area, is skiing in the backcountry on unmarked or unpatrolled areas either inside or outside a ski resorts boundaries. Unlike ski touring, backcountry skiing can include the use of ski lifts including snowcats and helicopters.
Climbing and skiing that do not start from a lift system. Alternatively, the starting point is the lift system, but the trip is so long that it requires a full day or overnight stay.
