The mission with D Jacket was to create the ultimate “workhorse” shell jacket. It’s robust enough for skiing, but light and agile enough to use all year around on any adventure. The secret is the combination of our Made to Move concept that allows full freedom of movement, together with the light and durable Apex 3-layer Hardshell.
Apex 3L Hardshell is a fully circular waterproof and breathable shell fabric. It means that it’s made from recycled fibers and is recyclable just like a soda bottle. The membrane is our well tested Atmos, a hydrophilic membrane free from fluorocarbons. The water repellent is also completely fluorocarbon free.
D Jacket has two hand pockets, chest pocket and two internal pockets to keep your gear in place. You have ventilation zips under each arm, a helmet compatible hood as well as a removable snow gaiter.
D Jacket is a great choice if you are looking for a shell jacket to use for different type of activities all year around. You can bring it on adventures from ski touring to kayaking. Houdini D jacket does a lot right! It has good pockets - outer pockets that sit a little higher so as not to end up under a possible waist belt. A good chest pocket on the outside. At the same height inside, there is an inner pocket in which you can keep your mobile phone, but it could have been slightly larger. I also miss a pocket on the sleeve for lift passes. I've had jackets both with and without and it's clearly easier to have the card on the sleeve if the reader is a bit sensitive. In addition, it is nice to know where you have the card.
The hood is large and fits well with a helmet. I also often use it outside the hill and then the hood is of course a bit large, but the possibilities of pulling it together are good. In the armpits, it is possible to open fairly large ventilation zippers.

The D-jacket has a removable snow lock, which makes it easy to take off if you don't want it. One effect of this, however, is a "stripe" that runs around the trunk where the snow lock attachment runs.
It is marketed as an all-year-round jacket and I agree that it is suitable for that, it looks good on the ski slopes but also suitable for other things, and the removable snow lock makes it suitable even in snowless seasons. However, the fabric is quite coarse (which is good for durability), but it also makes the jacket somewhat less suitable for hikes where a light backpack is the focus. Then the jacket becomes somewhat heavy and takes up some space when packed.
Otherwise, I like that it is made in Europe, Estonia to be more specific. Free from PFAS and recyclable as usual with Houdini. I am attaching a picture of how it looks after a bike ride in the rain. It often gets wet in parts at the end, but water has never gotten inside the jacket.
Overall, I am very satisfied and highly recommend it! But it's best to find it on sale as the price is high! SEK 5500 these days, so a little more than what is stated here on Freeride. I am 190cm 75kg and have size L - then I get good sleeve length and room with layers underneath.
