Manufacturers description
Built for freeride ski tourers seeking big mountain adventure, the Atomic Backland 102 is driven to explore, climb and descend with commanding confidence. Featuring the same construction as the wider Backland 109, FreeTour Profile creates a touring ski with serious downhill power. A poplar and caruba Ultra Light Woodcore provides the ideal balance of low weight and optimum performance and the lightweight, three-dimensional HRZN 3D tip increases surface area for better float in deep snow conditions. Powder Rocker delivers a pronounced tip and tail with camber underfoot for effortless, playful maneuverability in deep powder, crud, and chop. A reinterpretation of the original Backland construction, it’s built with more wood and less fiberglass, metal, and resin to reduce material-based CO2 equivalent emissions by 26% (compared with the Backland 100, 2022). Developed with Austrian backcountry legend, Matthias Haunholder, it’s the soulful skiing performance and uphill efficiency of the Backland 102 that has him skiing deeper into the mountains with every tour.

Summary:
This ski did a lot and topped all expectations that I had. I have several skis but was looking for a light top tour ski. So after a little research, I bought 102 and put on atk freeraider bindings. first thought to take narrower but turns after all to find powder;) Already on the first day when I tried them on the piste, I realized what a good buy it was, compared to my other off-piste skis that can barely handle lying on the steel edge in the piste, it was almost like this wanted to go up on the edges, you fly down and hardly notice the light weight except when you have to stop, then you have to take it a little carefully. Tried in sun-fried crispy loose snow of about 15 cm, they cut through phenomenally just like any other ski. on a 2.5 hour summit trip with the 2 transitions and boot pack, they were light on the feet and were not noticed on the piste, later on the nerve path they floated on in the loose snow, not like a pair of wider ones but for a 102 I am extremely happy.

When they get to uphill slopes me puckelpist, crud or icy slopes, they lose performance quickly, they are quite hard so every little hump moves the whole ski at the same time.
