Aavasaksa

Ski resorts in Finland
Aavasaksa is located in Finnish Lapland, about 6 miles north of Ylitornio, right by the Torne River and the border with Sweden. It’s a classic viewpoint and one of Finland’s national landscapes, with views that stretch far across the valley.
Skiing here is small-scale and easy to take in at a glance. There are three runs and one lift, with the longest run at about 0.6 miles and a vertical drop of 377 feet. At the bottom, there’s also a 197-foot-long magic carpet conveyor, which works well for the youngest kids and for getting started.

In addition to downhill skiing, there’s snow tubing and a sledding hill in the base area, making it easy to mix things up for a family day. The area also has cross-country trails, where you can head straight onto groomed loops directly from the ski center.

As a fun fact, Aavasaksa is also tied to the history of geodesy. The site is part of the Struve Geodetic Arc, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which gives the mountain a surprisingly extra dimension beyond skiing.
