Mount Furano

Furano   Intermediate

A must on the summit tour list if you find yourself in Furano. Further up the road towards Tokachi-dake, there are natural onsens that are a must-visit. A popular hike among locals, as we understood from our landlord in Furano. So, there will most likely be tracks available.

After the parking area, walk down the road for about 150m to find the trail on the left that crosses a small stream before heading upward. There are three different ridges that lead to the summit: West Ridge, Big Ridge, and Nose Ridge. I recommend the middle one, Big Ridge, as it is more open and wider, making it easier to traverse upward. Depending on the snow conditions, you can either ski in the ravines or on the ridges when coming down from the mountain.

Starting point:
Drive towards Hakuginsomae Camping. Then, when you turn west onto road 966 for the last time, there is parking immediately to the left.

You ski outside controlled areas at your own risk. Use and practice with your safety equipment. Inform yourself about the current, local conditions. Hire a mountain guide for better and safer skiing at the summit and backcountry. Have fun on the mountain and the courage to turn around when the risks are too great. Safe turns!
