Hidden Valley Highlands

Ski resorts in Canada
The Province of Ontario offers several alpine venues worth exploring, and places like the Hidden Valley Highlands stand out as a family-friendly experience that local skiers and snowboarders have enjoyed for decades. Its Ski Club is closely associated with the facility, creating a community of dedicated park rats that promote downhill activities to children and their families.

Hidden Valley Highlands is closer to Toronto than Ottawa, sitting in Hunstville, Ontario. Highway 11 and 60 are useful roadways, depending upon which direction motorists are moving. The venue is east of Huntsville, off Highway 60. Toronto's Pearson International Airport handles much of the region's air traffic, but it is over 136 miles away (several domestic and regional airfields are closer).

Membership has its Privileges

The Muskoka Ski Club shared the same name with the Hidden Valley Highlands ski area from 1971 until 2008. It purchased the ski venue and continues to own it today. Anyone looking to access the ski area must join the Muskoka Ski Club or get access through limited ticket sales. Lift tickets sell for the day, half-day, evening, and all day and night (youth and seniors get a discount). Visitors can also get a reduced rate through specials and ticket books, which many locals buy to save money.

The Hidden Valley Highlands ski area is family-focused, which one can see with their ski & snowboard lessons. These are available in one and two-hour slots, with programs like Parent and Tot private lessons offered as well. Booking in advance online is suggested with all ski venues, but the club-ran Hidden Valley Highlands ski area makes it a must-do process to ensure access to instructors and terrain to ski or ride over. Special programs for Junior Ski Instructors, Freestyling, Ladies, and multi-week ski and snowboard packages attract interest each season.

Pay to Play and Stay

The Hidden Valley Highlands Resort offers ski and stays lodging, and there are other resorts and accommodations available nearby for those wanting to stay overnight. Visitors can rent skis and snowboards but should do so ahead of time to avoid issues. Amenities are simple, so anyone coming to the ski venue should keep that in mind before arriving.

The surrounding area gets about 125 inches of snow annually, making machine-made powder crucial to sustainable conditions. The ski area has snowmaking capabilities across 90-percent of the terrain here, with a December through March season the norm.

The base elevation at the Hidden Valley Highlands ski area is 949 feet, and the summit reaches 1,276 feet. Skiers and snowboarders have a 333-foot vertical drop to work down, providing fun without an overly steep angle on most runs. Hidden Valley Highlands provides guests with 35 acres of skiable terrain, with over a dozen runs that guests can travel, depending upon their skill levels.

The terrain at the Hidden Valley Highlands breaks down into green/beginner (four runs), blue/intermediate (five runs), black diamond/advanced (three runs), and double black diamond/expert (one run/one glade).
