Ski resorts in USA
Situated between the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic coastline, the Commonwealth of Virginia might fly under some ski bum's radars. Skiers and snowboarders in the region know you can find winter sports venues, like the Massanutten Ski Resort, if you know where to look.

The four-season resort sits off of US Route 33 in McGaheysville, Virginia. That location puts it within driving distance of several states. Interstate travelers can use I-64, I-66, and I-81 to reach Harrisonburg to the west. Those flying in will find the Shenandoah Regional Airport (Weyers Cave, Virginia) only 30 minutes away or Dulles International Airport (Washington, DC) a two-hour drive.

Winter Fun in the Blue Ridge Mountains

The climate in the Commonwealth of Virginia changes from a humid subtropical environment east of the Blue Ridge Mountains to a continental climate west of the range. For the Massanutten Ski Resort area, that means mild winters compared to some winter venues further north.

Annual average snowfalls here are just under three feet (35 inches), so snowmaking equipment is a must-have. The ski area is covered, allowing machine-made snow to supplement the natural snowfall across the entire resort. Visitors from colder climates will find the temperatures usually drop just below freezing, compared to the single digits experienced in other parts of the country.

The Massanutten Ski Resort has expanded the base lodge to include a grab-and-go cafe to the existing Encounters Lounge. That adds to the drink and food amenities already in place, including the Base Camp Bar & Grill located on the patio area. Those staying for more than a day on the slopes can rent a condo or rooms at resort hotels around here. Shopping for gifts, necessities, and boutique browsing can keep folks busy when not riding their skis or boards across the 70 acres at Massanutten.

Winter Fun on the Big Hill

The winter entertainment for guests arriving at the Massanutten Ski Resort starts before they hit the slopes. Snow tubing is one way for youngsters of all ages to have fun in the snow without skis or a snowboard. The facilities have 16 lanes that are 900 feet long, with a vertical drop of 120. Neon lights offer a twist to tubing down the hill after dark.

An outdoor ice rink is another way to enjoy some winter fun without having to ride one or two planks down the hill. Lessons, helmets, and skates are available for visitors to rent. Indoor facilities include a fitness center, pool, and waterpark. These add to the resort's lounges and live entertainment so that everyone has fun on and off Massanutten.

The Massanutten Ski Resort has a base elevation of 1,750 feet and a summit at 2,925 feet. Its 1,100 foot vertical is the largest in the state, as well as a couple of others. There are over a dozen trails to ski or ride, the longest over 4,000 feet in length. Ratings range from beginner (green/36-percent), intermediate (blue/43-percent), and advanced (black diamond/21-percent).

The runs at Massanutten have lights for night skiing with access provided by four chairs and three surface lifts.
