Located in Van Buren County in southern Michigan, near Gobles, Timber Ridge is a family-oriented resort that builds much of its strength on the ease of having a smooth day of skiing. The ski area has 15 slopes and a vertical drop of about 239.5 feet, making it a typical "Midwest slope" where the focus is on many laps and short breaks rather than long runs.
The terrain is clearly leaning towards beginner and intermediate skiing – seven slopes are considered easy, five as intermediate and three as more advanced. For those who want to mix in a little more play, there are two parks, and also a separate tubing area. The lift system is surprisingly well designed for its size, with eight lifts in different variants, which helps to keep the flow going even when there are a lot of people.
The snow is a big part of the setup here. Timber Ridge gets around 4.9 feet of natural snow per season, but the most important thing is that there is access to artificial snow on all slopes, which means that you can maintain a more even level through the winter and get started early when the cold is set.
The story is also charming in its own way. When Timber Ridge opened in 1961, there was only one rope pull, driven by a 1949 Chevrolet, and several of today's slopes still bear the names of the first volunteers who worked on the slopes. Many other slopes are instead named after trees, which is fitting – this is a facility that feels built by and for people who actually ski there.
