A slightly hidden, small, pleasant ski resort (which probably really deserves 3.5 stars). Valmalenco is well suited for a few days of skiing, but perhaps not a whole week. Unfortunately, there are very limited opportunities for skiing directly from the door as the area is reached via a very impressive cable car from the larger village of Chiesa in Valmalenco (unless you live in tiny San Giuseppe). As I said, the area is quite small, but offers nice slopes that generally tend to be more dark red than blue. Everything is reached from relatively modern lifts that are strategically placed. The lift-carried off-piste is limited, but there is some nice forest skiing down from Cima Motta towards Dosso Dei Vetti (below the lift). Even from Sasso Nero, in good snow conditions, it is easy to find nice skiing next to the piste. There are good touring opportunities in the surroundings, but you need a car.
There are many nice restaurants on the slopes that serve both good food and drink at clearly reasonable prices. The local specialty Pizzoccheri should not be missed.
