Bláfjöll is a ski area in Iceland, about 12 miles south of Reykjavik, and it serves as the capital’s closest true “after-work hill” when winter delivers. People often ski here when a weather window opens—quick trip out, a few intense hours on the slopes, and then back home again.
The resort began in 1974 with the lift Lilli klifurmús, and Kóngsgil was the area where skiing first got started in Bláfjöll. Later, the lift system was expanded in stages, and in 2004 a hybrid lift was installed, marking a clear step in modernizing the area.
Bláfjöll isn’t a classic “Alpine resort,” but an Icelandic ski mountain where the experience is often dictated by wind, visibility, and snow. When everything lines up, you get great skiing close to Reykjavik—and when it doesn’t, you notice it fast, for better or worse.
