Hlíðarfjall is located just outside Akureyri and is one of Iceland’s most established ski areas. It’s easy to come here for a half-day or an evening session, but the mountain also has enough variety to keep a weekend interesting—especially when the snow is cooperating.
The ski area has a vertical drop of 1,493 feet, and the longest run is over 1.6 miles. The system has 7 lifts and 23 alpine runs, which means you can spread out and find different types of terrain without everything feeling like the same slope over and over again.
Snowmaking helps ensure coverage, and the season can usually stretch from late November to early May when winter delivers. A big bonus at this latitude is that there’s lighting for night skiing, making it possible to ski even when the days are at their shortest.
