Mt Seymour

Ski resorts in Canada
The Mount Seymour Provincial Park is known for its recreational activities, including winter skiing and snowboarding at the Mt Seymour ski resort. Since 1984, the Wood family has owned and operated the winter venue, with several upgrades since the early 2010s. Located roughly 10 miles from downtown Vancouver, the alpine area stays busy throughout the Winter.

Trans-Canada Highway 1 will take motorists across Burrard Inlet and into North Vancouver. Local roadways provide access to the ski venue. The Vancouver International Airport serves regional air traffic and has plenty of rental services to transport flyers to the resort. Americans can drive I-5 north from Blaine, Washington, to get to the area less than 50-miles north of the border.

Ski and Ride the Northshore Mountains

The Mount Seymour Provincial Park sits in the Northshore Mountains, with the resort positioned west of the Indian Arm portion of the Inlet. That provides views of the water, the city, and the mountain range. A contrast in elevation in the region makes for varied annual snowfall amounts (between 39 and 390-plus inches). Fortunately for ski bums in the area, the higher elevation of the Mt Seymour ski area brings an average annual snowfall of 394 inches.

With a location this close to Vancouver, it is understandable that lodging accommodations are found off-site. The Three Peaks Lodge is the hub at the Mt Seymour ski area, with the Grillworks Cafeteria, Rock Chute Bar & Grill, and the Whiskey Jack Room all found there. A full-service shop sells gear, provides tune-ups and repairs, or rents equipment (including seasonal rentals that locals can take advantage of).

The Mt Seymour Ski & Snowboard School offers single-day and multi-day classes. These range from first-timer sessions to advanced skiers looking to improve their freestyle abilities. There is also an Apprentice Instructor Program for those 15 or older that want to teach others to appreciate alpine fun.

Plenty of Winter Fun On/Off the Trails

Several backcountry trails surround the Mt Seymour ski area, providing guests close access to cross-country skiing. Snowshoeing rentals and tours complement visitors of all skill levels, with beginner/intermediate/advanced-rated trails ready to explore. Snow tubing is a popular attraction for kids of all ages, with two-hour tickets and season passes accessing the Snow Tube Park. Tobogganing is another popular winter event, and guests can rent or bring their sled to the designated area with tickets offering full-day access at the Mt Seymour Tobogganing area.

A base elevation of 3,347 feet and a summit of 4,150 feet help create the 1,083-foot drop that skiers and riders enjoy here. There are 200 skiable acres at the Mt Seymour ski area, with family-friendly terrain that favors beginners and casual snow hounds. Seven runs are rated green, making them ideal for beginners learning the basics. There are eight slopes rated as black diamond, indicating that skiers and riders should be well-seasoned before exploring them.

Most of the terrain at Mt Seymour rates as blue (26 runs), making them challenging and fun for skiers and snowboarders with some experience. Five lifts keep everybody moving uphill here, including the Tube Park tow.
