Kasprowy Wierch

Kasprowy Wierch rises above Zakopane in the Polish Tatra Mountains and is the country’s most distinctive high-mountain ski area. The cable car from Kuźnice reaches just below the summit at 6,519 feet, where two chairlifts serve the skiing in Gąsienicowa and Goryczkowa. In total, there are around 9.3 miles of marked runs, 3,136 feet of vertical drop, and a longest descent of approximately 5.3 miles.

The ski area is small on paper, with four runs and three lifts, but the terrain is considerably more alpine than at most Polish resorts. Here, skiers can expect open slopes, natural snow, and long, sometimes challenging descents rather than wide family runs. Gąsienicowa has about 1,312 feet of vertical drop, while Goryczkowa offers around 1,969 feet and the possibility of continuing along the ski route down toward Kuźnice when snow conditions permit.

Its altitude provides good snow coverage during the right winter, but the area is also sensitive to wind, fog, and changing natural snow conditions. Off-piste skiing close to the marked runs and ski touring are available in the area, but Kasprowy lies within Tatra National Park, and skiing outside the open routes requires respect for local regulations, avalanche danger, and rapidly changing weather.

The cable car opened as early as 1936 and remains Poland’s only high-mountain cable car. Kasprowy Wierch is best suited to experienced skiers who prioritize true mountain terrain and long descents over an extensive trail network, a snow park, and convenient resort infrastructure.
