We came up in the evening when it was dark, packed our bags and went and let us down. My first impression when I awoke to the sun that went up behind the mountain tops on the other side of the valley from the cottage we had rented was "my god what it is beautiful here".

Funäsfjällen is 6 separate lift systems that are merged during a lift pass. As a mediocre or more advanced skier, it goes without a problem through an entire system in one day. Tänndalen is the largest with its 53 slopes. At least the Tänndalsvallen is with 3 slopes. Compared to e.g. Skistar's places I think that Funäsfjällen's ski pass is relatively affordable in relation to what you get. However, I recommend buying a "3 out of 5 day card" to secure for both changed weather conditions and partly to have time to see other than just the slopes.

In Funäsfjällen you will find most things; skiing for families, beginners and the advanced skier, nature snow in Ramundberget, lift-borne off-piste areas in Tänndalen and Ramundberget, apres ski and live bands in Tänndalen and really well groomed, albeit a bit short pistes in Funäsdalsberget. On the whole, I think that Funäsfjällen is a really good Swedish ski resort for most types of skiers, as long as you have a car and can take you smoothly between the mountain peaks! But what I think makes Funäsfjällen unique is the super-easy gateway to fantastic peak tours in the Swedish mountains.

I have been to Funäsfjällen on 2 occasions, once in March and once during Christmas. When I was there in March 2018 it had snowed lots 2 weeks before, followed by sun and thaw, so when we got there the powder was gone. Remains on the peaks lay a lot but hard packed snow. However, we had brilliant sun all week and found fluff between the trees. The second time I was there in July there were very changing weather conditions. We got everything from sun, 20cm fresh snow to storm and plus degrees. In July, about half of the systems were open and there was not much snow out on the mountain, so we had to settle for where the snow was. However, we found some really soft slopes in Ramundbergets Västhang and around Skarsliften where it was not open yet. When the wind was blowing and only 1 anchor lift lift in Tänndalen, 1 anchor lift in Funäsdalsberget and 1 anchor lift in Ramundberget was open, we toured for the cork screw and got us a really soft and nice ride down.

Well, back to what I think makes Funäsfjällen so wonderful - the top tour. There are plenty of opportunities to get up on mountain peaks and get nice ride down. When we were there in March we traveled partly up to Svansjökläppen from Tänndalen. Start by taking the lift up, going down the back and skipping the plate. Then the climb begins for the top of hides. Svansjökläppen is a good ride for it as new on skitouring. And when you are at the top, the view is fantastic. Other tours you can do is go up to the Big and Little Sheaf. Start either by taking the snowmobile from Tänndalens Ski rental up to Andersborgs Våffelstuga and go from there. Or go all the way up from Bruksvallarna on the other side! This tour requires good fitness, avalanche knowledge and habit in off-piste skiing. If you are more above, there are opportunities to tour with a guide. Of course, you should bring with you avalanche equipment and have checked avalanche forecasts before you make any peak trips outside the systems! When you are happy with today's skiing, there is nothing better than slipping into one of the waffle houses that are up on the mountain. Magic with waffle and coffee in the sun on the mountain!

We have lived in Fjällfrid's holiday village in Bruksvallarna when we have been in Funäsfjällen. Superfine cabins in varying size and price range. All cottages include either a heated hot tub or a sauna. The price is at the slightly higher level, but so does everything, including cleaning.

For me who comes from Stockholm, the disadvantage is that Funäsfjällen takes a long time to drive to. And car is almost the only sensible option to get there. It is possible to take Härjedalingen up to Funäsdalen and then go local buses between the resorts, but as mentioned earlier, it is worth having a car well up in place to get between the resorts and the top tours. Compared to taking the train to e.g. Åre or the night train to Riksgränsen is a long and a bit difficult to get to and from Funäsfjällen. The advantage, however, is that many people choose to stay in Vemdalen, which is closer to it. This means that there are not quite as many people in Funäsfjällen. And it is always an advantage to avoid lift queues!

Another disadvantage is that there is not so much to do as it is bad weather. As previously mentioned, it blew a storm followed by a degree when we were there in July. Because quite a bit open than that, there was not so many cozy restaurants to go on and most lifts were closed. If it is really bad weather it is easier to entertain yourself in, for example, Åre or at Storhogna's high mountain hotels than in Funäsfjällen. The Fjällmuseet in Funäsdalen is a cozy, bad-weather activity, but a visit is enough.

So on the whole I can highly recommend visiting Funäsfjällen. Experience Freeride Paradise in Tänndalen, get out on the many mountain peaks and find your favorite waffle among the waffle houses. I myself should skipp to buy a ski pass next time and focus on just touring. The next trip will be up at Ånnfjället and Mittåkläppen.

+ extremely beautiful landscape
+ good top tour possibilities
+ waffle houses
+ not so much people
- way to go
- Not so much activities for days with bad weather

Here is everything a skier can wish for. Amazing cross country trails and lovely slopes for all and above all a genuine feeling throughout the valley. There are amazing mountains and unspoilt nature. Snow conditions.

Here is the wilderness and not like Åre, which is more like a suburb of Stockholm. More snow and less icy
Here you can get up to the mountain and be completely alone.
Well-prepared do not back so many people in the bank
