Powderhorn

Ski resorts in USA
The Grand Mesa area in western Colorado is home to the Powderhorn ski area. A rope tow kicked off skiing in the area in 1940, and other equipment improved access over the next several years. The ski area officially opened in 1966 and has continued to improve its facilities each season.

The Grand Junction and Montrose regional airports are the closest fly-in facilities, and Amtrack runs services through Grand Junction. Motorists can use Interstate 70 to travel into the area before transferring to Colorado State Highway 65. The ski area sits about 45 minutes east of Grand Junction by car.

Ski and Ride the Largest Flat-Top Mountain in the World

Grand Mesa covers about 500 square miles and rises around 6,000 feet above the surrounding river valleys. The Powderhorn ski area sits at 8,200 feet (base elevation) and has a peak elevation of 9,850 feet. Higher elevations on the Grand Mesa are colder than the surrounding area and produce more moisture. The average annual snowfall in the ski area is 250 inches. An upgrade to the current snowmaking system will provide more machine-made powder through an energy-efficient pipeline that uses gravity to move water.

Amenities found at the Powderhorn ski area include shopping at Outdoor Elements, the rental & repair shop, and four distinct locals for drinks/food. Several classes and programs are available through the Ski & Ride Center. That includes group or private lessons, kids lessons, and Bob Beverly FREE Learn to Ski & Ride Program (8 years or older). Specialty programs include multi-week sessions, racing clubs, and the Colorado Discover Ability program for those with disabilities.

On-mountain lodging is available at Powderhorn in the Tiny Homes, and other accommodations are available off the mountain in Grand Junction, Mesa, and Palisade. The Tiny Homes are under development, so renting will be limited until the project finishes.

Alpine, Crosscountry, and Uphill, Oh My!

The Powderhorn ski area offers over 1,600 acres of skiing and riding terrain. There is plenty of tree skiing adventures to be found, and the resort maintains an Uphill skiing policy. Lower Peace Park offers beginners the boxes and rails they need to learn to freestyle on, while Upper Pece Park offers features that let rippers and shredders get some airtime on.

The Powderhorn ski area also has Nordic trails, with access from Odin Recreational Center. Cross country skiers and snowshoers will find several routes with ratings from green to black diamond. Guests to the ski area have a 1,650-foot vertical to work with, which should offer potentials for all skill levels.

The Powderhorn maintains over 60 runs, with blue-rated intermediate runs covering half of the mountain. Twenty percent of the trails here have a blue rating that provides access for newbies, and the remaining 30-percent of the terrain is black diamond ratings for advanced exploration. Tenderfoot/Lower Dude is the longest run at 1.8 miles in length. Powderhorn uses two doubles, a quad, and a magic carpet to move guests around the ski area.
