Saariselkä

Saariselkä is located in northern Finnish Lapland, south of Ivalo and next to Urho Kekkonen National Park. The ski area stretches across the Kaunispää and Iisakkipää fells, with slopes leading down toward a shared valley. This provides two mountain sides to alternate between without having to switch ski areas.

The focus is on easy and intermediate piste skiing, but there are also steeper runs for experienced skiers. Six lifts serve the area. With approximately 558 feet of vertical drop, the runs are relatively short rather than long descents. Beginner slopes, a snow park, and ski cross provide variety for families and groups with different ability levels.

The northern location provides good snow conditions despite the limited elevation. Many runs are illuminated, which is an important part of skiing during the dark winter. Saariselkä’s primary alpine offering is groomed pistes and park skiing, not a large selection of lift-accessed off-piste terrain.

From Kaunispää, a connecting piste leads down toward the village, giving the ski area a practical link to the accommodations and services there. Saariselkä is best suited to families, beginners, and piste skiers who appreciate a manageable area in a mountain setting rather than a large vertical drop and extensive steep terrain.
