Wagrain

Ski resorts in Austria
Wagrain is one of the Austrian ski resorts located in the eastern parts of the Alps and therefore does not belong to Tyrol. It is also the village where, in the 1950s, Alois Rohrmoser decided to hire four craftsmen and expand his business in the wheel industry with winter sports equipment, which later became the basis of Atomic skis. Joseph Mohr, author of the original text of Silent Night, also lived his last years in Wagrain, something that left its mark on the village's Christmas festivities.
The village is squeezed in between Flachau and Alpendorf and therefore provides really good access to both parts of the shared ski system. The surrounding mountains are slightly lower than what is usual further west in the Alps and the skiing is therefore mostly limited to below the tree line, however, basically the entire ski system is built on the north sides of the mountains, so despite the small altitude, snow is rarely a problem. The slopes are overhanging red with splashes of blue.
