Kanin starts from the village of Bovec and is located in the middle of Triglav National Park. The way here is via the Predil Pass and gives a clear feeling that skiing here is different from more traditional alpine destinations. Kanin is Slovenia's highest ski area with peaks around 2,300 metres above sea level, which often means better snow conditions than in the country's lower resorts.
The ski area is reached via an older gondola from the valley, which can mean both long journeys and queues on intense days. Once up, the impression changes quickly. The terrain is vast, open and clearly high alpine, with soft ridges and wide slopes that give a more large-scale impression than many other Slovenian ski resorts.
Kanin is linked to the Italian system Sella Nevea, which provides access to skiing on both sides of the border. The lift range is limited but focused, and the area is particularly known for its off-piste potential when snow conditions allow. With the right timing, Kanin attracts freeriders who are looking for open terrain rather than dense forest areas.
The view from the top is one of the ski area's strongest cards. On a clear day, your gaze extends all the way to the Adriatic Sea. All in all, Kanin is a ski resort that is not about comfort or efficient lift logistics, but about altitude, views and the opportunity for different skiing in a borderland between the Alps and the Mediterranean.
