Sugar Mountain is located in the North Carolina High Country, on a ridge in the Pisgah National Forest. The base starts around 1,820.2 feet and the peak reaches about 1,2017.7 feet, which means that the season often has a little better conditions than you might expect so far south in the United States.
The ski area consists of 20 slopes and approximately 51 hectares of skiable area. The terrain is easy to understand and suitable for those who want to wear out the piste, go with family or just have a smooth skiing day without complicated transport. There is access to artificial snow on all slopes, which is key here when the weather changes, and there is also night skiing on 14 slopes (about 40 hectares) – perfect if you want to get in extra runs after work or max out a weekend.
The lift system is unexpectedly strong for its size, with a fast six-chair lift, two fast four-chair lifts and several complementary lifts to keep the flow up. In addition to skiing, there are activities such as tubing, ice skating and snowshoeing, which means that companies with mixed interests usually enjoy themselves.
A fun detail in the area is the large building at Sugar Top, often referred to as "The Sugar Cube" by locals and students nearby. It stands out on the horizon – and was one of the reasons why North Carolina introduced a law to protect mountain ridges from similar construction projects in the future.
