Terry Peak is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, just outside of Lead and close to historic Deadwood. This is one of the more unexpectedly serious ski areas in the region, with a peak of around 2,502 feet and a clear "local-resort" feel where you get a lot of skiing without everything having to be huge and complicated.
The ski area has 30 slopes and a mix that works for most levels – from gentler slopes for beginners to steeper options that provide a little more challenge. For those who like to play, there is also a terrain park. Terry Peak receives an average of around 149.6 inches of natural snow per season, and with access to artificial snow, they can often maintain a more consistent quality through the winter, even when the weather fluctuates.
A large part of the experience is in the lifts. There are three fast four-chair lifts that will get you back up and running quickly, plus a traditional-pace lift and a snow carpet in the base area. It allows you to grind laps efficiently and get a lot of riding in one day.
Terry Peak also has a long history. Skiing has been here since 1936, the first chairlift came in the 50s and the facility has been expanded in stages since then. The mountain has also hosted the NCAA Skiing Championships (1971), and the peak is also a clear landmark in the area, with transmitter towers visible from a distance.
