Sleeping Giant Ski Resort is located just outside the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park, nestled in Wyoming's Absaroka Mountains. The ski slope was founded back in 1936 in the Shoshone National Forest and has survived thanks to strong local involvement – here the people of Cody have chosen to preserve their classic home slope when many other small facilities have disappeared.
With 184 skiable acres, three lifts, and a vertical drop of 808 feet (about 807.1 feet), Sleeping Giant offers varied but easy-to-understand skiing. The terrain is evenly distributed between beginner, intermediate and advanced slopes, making the mountain practical for families and groups of different levels. The base area is compact, with rental, ski school and a warm lodge as a natural gathering point between runs.
What sets Sleeping Giant apart is the environment and culture. The Shoshone River flows just below the facility, the views towards the Yellowstone direction are open and the queues are usually short. The atmosphere is relaxed and inclusive – here you are just as happy to ski in jeans as in race gear, and it is common for skiers to help each other in the lift or stop for a simple "tailgate après-ski" in the parking lot.
Sleeping Giant is not a large-scale destination, but a genuine mountain slope where skiing, nature and community are at the center. For those looking for a slower pace, historical anchoring and skiing in a classic Rocky-Mountain environment, this is a clear alternative to the larger and more commercial resorts.
