Hamra South will become a new ski area completely without lifts and groomed runs. The forest on the mountainside has been thinned out, and the area is avalanche-controlled since it falls under the ski patrol’s area of responsibility.
The area is located on the south side of Hamrafjället, within walking distance of the main ski area in Tänndalen. The Hamra South mountainside sits on the opposite side of the road when viewed from Tänndalen’s ski system.
Historically, Hamra South is the cradle of alpine skiing in Tänndalen. This is the mountainside of the valley where it all happened back in the day. Skiing has taken place on Hamrafjället’s southern slopes since the early 1900s, using long wooden skis and leather boots that were used to travel both uphill and downhill. In 1951, the first groomed run opened with an accompanying chairlift on the south side of Hamrafjället, but today the lift has been dismantled and the slope was then left to grow back in, while the ski area on the other side instead continued to develop. But for the 2021/2022 winter season, the forest has once again been thinned for skiing—this time for ski touring.
The Hamra South ski touring area opens in mid/late December and remains open through all of April. The cost is 100 SEK/day for adults; youth ages 7–17 pay 50 SEK/day. If you have a lift pass in Tänndalen, it’s free.
