Owl's Head

Ski resorts in Canada
Some winter venues create a memorable experience with a unique location or view, and the Owl's Head ski resort is one of these destinations. Located just 1.5-hours from Montreal, Quebec, this ski area sits on the western shores of Lake Memphremagog. The year-round facility offers a balanced trail system for beginners, intermediates, and advanced ski bums alike.

Driving from Montreal involves using Autoroute 10 east before transferring to Route 245 south at Eastman. The resort is on the east side of Masonville, Quebec. It is only a few miles from Vermont, so Americans can reach it quickly by traveling north from Newport on Vermont State Highway 105. Those flying into the Province will likely use the Montréal–Trudeau International Airport.

Skiing and Riding in the Historic Eastern Townships

Once known as an administrative area in the Province, the Eastern Townships now have a reputation for outdoor recreation, including alpine skiing and snowboarding. The Owl's Head ski resort is one of several winter venues that work together through promotions to entice snow hounds to visit. Ski-in/ski-out accommodations are available at the MTN Haus Hotel, with several off-site lodging options in nearby communities. On-the-go ski bums can refuel at the MTN Haus cafeteria or sit for a fine meal at the resto-bar.

The Wax Owl's Head shop offers new gear and apparel, along with repairs and tune-ups to get visitors up and on their skis or boards. Its staff is trained and passionate about alpine sports, making them more than willing to take the time to get guests and gear working together (they are also quick, adjusting up to 30 pairs of skis an hour). Rental equipment is offered for half-day and full-day rentals, or multiple days if rented as a package.

The Ski School at the Owl's Head ski resort uses certified instructors (Canadian Ski Instructor's Alliance and Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors) to teach visitors that are first-timers to advanced skiers and snowboarders looking to improve their technique. Sessions can be private, semi-private, or open groups that break down by age or interest.

Lakeside Skiing and Snowboarding

The Owl's Head ski area receives over 98 inches of snowfall each year. Staff at the resort use 350 pieces of snowmaking equipment to supplement those annual totals. That provides snowmaking coverage over 95-percent of the venue's skiable terrain. The top elevation here is 2,470 feet, helping to create the 1772-foot vertical drop that guests ski or ride down.

Visitors to the Owl's Head ski area have 125 skiable acres of terrain to play upon, with an evenly distributed rating percentage. Green-rated beginner runs cover about 30-percent of the mountain, offering newbies plenty of room to learn and practice their technique. Intermediate skiers and snowboarders can explore 35-percent of the alpine runs with a blue rating that will keep things challenging but fun. The rest of the Owl's Head skiable terrain breaks down as black diamond/advanced (15-percent) or double black diamond/expert (20-percent) ratings.

Guests can reach the top of the 50 alpine runs using the Owl's Head lift system, consisting of five lifts and a magic carpet.
