Ski resort has shut down
Ski Blandford, formerly known as the Blandford Ski Area, was located in Blandford, western Massachusetts, and held a unique place in North American skiing history. The resort was operated by the Springfield Ski Club from 1936 until 2017 and was then North America's oldest continuously operated, club-owned ski area.
After a private sale to Ski Butternut, the mountain underwent extensive refurbishment. The snow cannon system was expanded, new piste machines were put into use and both the older and the new lodge were modernized inside and out. After the renovation, the facility reopened as Ski Blandford in the 2018/2019 season.
The ski area offered 27 slopes, 12 of which were illuminated at night, two parks and five lifts: three double chairlifts, a rope lift and a conveyor belt. The terrain was well-balanced with around 30% easy, 45% intermediate and 25% more difficult skiing, making the area popular with both local families and more experienced skiers. Snow cannons covered around 80 percent of the mountain, and the season normally stretched from mid-December to mid-March.
Despite the new start, the operation was short-lived. On March 26, 2020, it was announced that Ski Blandford would not reopen, and the facility was permanently closed. For many in New England, however, the memory of Ski Blandford lives on as a piece of genuine, non-profit skiing culture.
