Located in New Hartford, Connecticut, Ski Sundown is one of the state's most high-profile evening slopes. Almost the entire resort is illuminated, which means that skiing continues long after the end of the working day and gives the resort a clear identity as an after-work slope for local skiers.
The terrain consists of 17 slopes with clear variation. Here you will find everything from calm beginner slopes to steeper drop lines for experienced skiers. Tom's Treat stands out as a long, winding run that stretches over just over a mile and also houses a simpler park section. At the other end of the scale is Gunbarrel, a straight and steep piste that follows the fall line all the way down and is often used for both training and competition. When snow permits, mogul slopes are prepared in Exhibition and Gunbarrel, among others, something that is appreciated by technically oriented skiers.
Freestyle skiing is clearly defined in two parks: a more accessible park at Tom's Treat and a more demanding park on the black piste Stinger, where features are continuously adapted to the season and conditions. The double-black Satan's Stairway, which opened in 2014, has further strengthened Sundown's profile towards more advanced riding.
The lifts cover the entire mountain efficiently, and for the 2024/2025 season, a big step forward was taken when the classic Exhibition lift was replaced by a modern four-seater chairlift with conveyor belts – the first of its kind in Connecticut. The result is higher capacity and smoother flow up the mountain, which is especially noticeable on popular evenings.
Ski Sundown is not a vast destination, but a technically interesting and well-used facility where night skiing, steep slopes and park skiing are at the center. For many skiers in the region, it is precisely the combination of accessibility and clear character that makes the slope memorable.
