Bjelašnica is located just southwest of Sarajevo and is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most famous ski resorts. The mountain rises to 2,219.8 feet above sea level and has a clear high alpine character, with open slopes above the tree line and more sheltered skiing further down. The location often provides a stable winter climate, although weather and wind can play a major role on the exposed peaks.
The ski area became internationally famous when it hosted the alpine competitions during the 1984 Winter Olympics. The history of the competition is still evident in the facility, not least in the steeper slopes that go straight down from a higher altitude. The drop is clear and the skiing is often perceived as more direct and physical than in many family-oriented ski resorts.
The piste system consists of both wider slopes and narrower, sportier routes. In good snow conditions, the terrain on the side of the slopes also appeals, mainly thanks to open spaces and natural formations rather than forest skiing. However, it is a mountain that requires respect for weather, visibility and snow conditions.
Bjelašnica is not a classic holiday resort with a large village life, but more of a functional ski area where the focus is on the skiing itself. The proximity to Sarajevo makes it easy to combine skiing with city life, culture and food, providing a clear contrast between alpine scenery and urban environment.
