Bjelašnica lies just southwest of Sarajevo and is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s best-known ski resorts. The mountain rises to 6,781 feet and has a distinctly alpine character, with open slopes above the tree line and more sheltered skiing farther down toward Babin Do. Its location often provides a good winter climate, but weather and wind play a major role on the exposed summits.
The men’s alpine events during the 1984 Winter Olympics were held here. The trail system at Babin Do covers approximately 8.7 miles and has eight lifts, including a six-person chairlift running toward the summit. The vertical drop is around 2,625 feet, and the skiing often feels more direct and physically demanding than at many family-oriented resorts. When snow conditions are good, the off-piste terrain is also appealing, especially the open areas higher up.
The same operator, Olimpijski centri Bjelašnica-Igman, also runs Igman, with Malo Polje and Veliko Polje located a short distance to the north. The areas are not connected by lifts, but they belong to the same Olympic mountain range. Bjelašnica is more about skiing than village life. Its proximity to Sarajevo makes it easy to combine skiing with time in the city.
