Ikenotaira Onsen

Ikenotaira Onsen is located in the Myoko area of Niigata and is one of the more easygoing options in a region otherwise often associated with deep snow and steeper tree skiing. Here you get wide groomers, plenty of space, and a calmer vibe than several of the more well-known Myoko resorts.

The ski area has 10 runs, 6 lifts, and a vertical drop of about 2,428 feet. The longest run is roughly 2.5 miles, and much of the terrain is well suited for beginners and intermediate skiers who want to build confidence, cruise, and get used to Japanese snow without being thrown straight into tight trees or steep sidecountry.

Snow is still a key part of the experience. Myoko often gets huge snowfall totals, and Ikenotaira offers both wide groomed slopes and ungroomed tree-run zones where you can find softer snow after a storm. The tree skiing is more forgiving than on many other Japanese mountains, which makes the area appealing if you want to step from groomers into powder without it getting too steep or too tight.

If you’re into riding a snowpark, Ikenotaira is also a strong pick. The park is often considered one of the better ones in Myoko, with jumps and features that are built up throughout the season. The combination of wide runs, a solid park, and accessible tree terrain makes Ikenotaira Onsen a great choice for skiers looking for a friendlier—but still very snow-rich—side of Myoko.
