Tsugaike Kogen

Tsugaike Kogen is located in the northern part of the Hakuba Valley and is one of the valley’s largest and most versatile ski areas. It’s best known for its wide, gentle runs down low, where beginners and families have plenty of space, but higher up there’s significantly more interesting terrain for experienced skiers.

The ski area has a big vertical drop, from village level up to a high-alpine feel near the Tsugaike Ropeway. The lower section is wide, easy to ski, and perfect for carving, technique practice, and more relaxed ski days. Farther up, the vibe becomes more alpine, with better snow quality, steeper pitches, and access to trees and ungroomed terrain when conditions allow.

For freeriders, Tsugaike is especially appealing thanks to access toward Tsugaike Nature Park and larger backcountry terrain above the lift system. This isn’t typical off-piste right next to the groomers—it's terrain that requires the right gear, awareness of weather and avalanche risk, and respect for local rules. When the snow sets up right, the area can deliver long tours, deep Hokkaido-like powder, and a bigger mountain feel than many other parts of Hakuba.

Tsugaike Kogen suits both families and more experienced skiers, but for different reasons. For beginners, it’s one of Hakuba’s easiest areas to ski. For advanced skiers, it’s mainly the upper mountain and the backcountry access that make the resort exciting.
