Mount Egmont (Taranaki)

Mount Taranaki (Egmont) on New Zealand's North Island is like an almost perfect cone-shaped volcano, surrounded by green plains and coastal landscapes. The skiing here is small compared to the South Island's large resorts, but offers a unique experience – skiing on a single volcano with the sea in view. The ski area ranges from about 1,200 to 1,1968.5 feet altitude and is run on a non-profit basis, with a few simple lifts and a limited number of slopes.

For beginners, shorter, easier slopes are available near the base, while the intermediate skier can explore slightly longer lines and natural terrain shapes. Advanced skiers like to climb steeper sections higher on the volcano or summit hike all the way to the 2,518-metre-high crater. Freeskiing is characterized by open slopes and large areas without forest, but the snow conditions can be weather-dependent and quickly change.

The facilities are simple – the base offers lodge accommodation and basic services, but more choice can be found in New Plymouth, less than an hour's drive away. The atmosphere is genuine and local, with few tourists. The combination of volcanic landscapes, coastal location and small-scale nature makes Taranaki a special destination for those who want to experience a more remote side of New Zealand skiing.
