Ohau

Ski resorts in New Zealand
Ohau Snow Fields is a small but charming ski resort in the Mackenzie area of the South Island. It is located between 1,425 and 1,3034.8 feet altitude and offers three lifts and about 15 slopes. Despite its modest size, Ohau attracts with magnificent views of Lake Ohau and the surrounding mountains, as well as an atmosphere characterized by a genuine "kiwi ski field" feel.
For beginners, there are easier slopes and a ski school at the base area. The intermediate skier appreciates the longer blue and red slopes that wind down the open slopes, while advanced skiers seek out steeper terrain and the easily accessible off-piste fields higher up. On days with fresh snow, Ohau offers excellent powder skiing without crowds.

The range of services is simple but functional, with a café and rental at the ski area. Most people stay in Lake Ohau Lodge below the mountain, which offers both accommodation, a restaurant and a shared social atmosphere. The lift queues are short and the feeling is familiar, which means that many visitors return year after year. The combination of small-scale, spectacular views and genuine community makes Ohau one of New Zealand's most personal skiing experiences.
