Tomamu

Tomamu is located in central Hokkaido and is a larger, more resort-oriented option than Sahoro, while still offering that distinctly Japanese snow feel. The ski area spans two mountains and has 29 runs, 13.4 miles of groomed trails, and 306.2 acres of skiable terrain. The longest run is 2.6 miles, making Tomamu a good choice if you want to combine longer groomed runs with powder close to the lift system.

Snow is a big part of the appeal. Tomamu is clearly marketed around Hokkaido’s dry powder, and there are designated ungroomed powder zones within the ski system. These are rated for advanced skiers and require registration and safety equipment, but they offer the chance to ski fresh snow without having to leave the resort entirely.

The terrain suits many ability levels. There are plenty of mellow runs for families and intermediate skiers, but also steeper sections, with a maximum pitch of 35 degrees in No Gravity. If you like riding a terrain park, there’s also Tomamu Slopestyle Park, divided into different levels from beginner to advanced.

Tomamu is best for those who want a comfortable Hokkaido trip with hotels, restaurants, and lots of services close to the slopes, while still being able to find powder and ungroomed skiing when the snow falls. It’s not as purely “just skiing” as some smaller Japanese areas, but as a combination of resort amenities, groomed runs, and powder, it’s a strong choice.
