Mt Naeba/Kagura

Ski resorts in Japan
Mt. Naeba is one of the major ski areas in Niigata and, in practice, consists of two distinct ski experiences: Naeba and Kagura. Naeba is the more classic ski resort, with hotels, wide groomers, and lots of services at the base. Kagura—with the Mitsumata, Kagura, and Tashiro areas—sits higher up and is the part that especially attracts skiers chasing snow, a long season, and more natural terrain.
Naeba has a big, resort-style feel, with multiple lifts, long runs, and clear Japanese resort logistics, with the Naeba Prince Hotel right at the slopes. The area also has alpine history and has hosted World Cup races. It’s a great choice if you want comfortable skiing, night skiing, plenty of services, and easy access from Tokyo via Echigo-Yuzawa.

Kagura is the more snow-reliable and freeride-oriented side. The skiing goes up to about 5,906 feet, which means colder snow and a long season. There are plenty of runs for beginners and intermediates, but also ungroomed descents, tree runs, and easily accessible sidecountry close to the lifts. From the top, there are also bigger backcountry options for experienced riders with the right gear and a solid understanding of avalanche risk.

Between Naeba and Tashiro runs the Dragondola, a long gondola that makes the area an unusually large, connected ski complex for Japan. For groomer skiers, it adds variety and lots of different zones to explore. For freeriders, Kagura is the main reason to come here—especially after snowfall, when the higher elevations hold powder longer than many lower resorts in the Yuzawa area.
