Zao Liza World

Zao Liza World is located at Zao Bodaira Kogen in Yamagata, on the slopes of the Zao volcanic area. It’s a smaller, more low-key ski resort than the larger Zao Onsen, but with the same distinctive winter setting: dry snow, a high-plateau feel, and the famous “snow monsters”—trees encased in snow and rime ice.

The ski area sits around 3,280 feet above sea level and isn’t large, but it’s reliably snowy when winter is in full swing. It can dump a lot overnight, and the snow is often cold and dry. The skiing is mostly groomed runs with shorter natural side hits, both in the lower section and higher up toward the volcanic terrain. It’s not steep the whole way, but when conditions line up, there are small off-piste options and soft lines through the trees.

Zao Liza is best for anyone who wants a cozy Japanese ski day rather than a huge lift network. Here, the experience is almost as important as the vertical: a calm atmosphere, snow-covered trees, volcanic scenery, and proximity to Zao Onsen if you want to pair it with bigger skiing and hot springs the next day.
