Zao Onsen

Ski resorts in Japan
Zao Onsen in Yamagata is one of Japan's most classic ski resorts – not just for skiing, but for the combo of onsen and the famous "snow monsters" (juhyo) up on the mountain. When cold Siberian winds and moisture meet, hoarfrost builds up on the trees and the entire summit area looks like a frozen fairytale landscape.
The ski area is large by Japanese standards, with about 31.1 miles of slopes and a vertical drop of 2890.4 feet (780–5449.5 feet). There are 25 slopes, and the longest trail is 5.6 miles, which gives you plenty of skiing time in one go once you end up right.

In terms of skiing, many people like the piste and easily accessible off-piste feeling close to the trails are happiest here. A lot of it is blue/medium difficult, but Zao also has some really steeper sections – including the so-called "walls" that can be really challenging when it's hard surfaces.

The snow is often dry and light (Tohoku can deliver nice pow), but the summit area is also known for being windy and exposed, which can result in windy and sometimes messier visibility. After skiing, it's hard to beat the feeling of slipping into a warm onsen in the village – Zao really is one of those places where skiing and the environment are connected.
